چکیده

In the earlier experiments it was established that a bilayer of pure egg phosphatidyl choline containing less than 50 per cent by volume of n-decane had a capacitance of 0.38 /ff/cm2 , this value being independent of applied voltage up to at least 50 my and independent of frequency between 200 and 5 X 106 cs. It was also unaffected by the nature and concentration of the surrounding electrolyte solution for NaCl, KC1, and CaC12. In an attempt to discover more about the electrical properties of the film at frequencies below 200 cps the time dependence of the response to a sudden change in the D.C. potential across the film was examined. The transients were characterized by a single time constant and, using the measured value of the

Model answers to lipid membrane questions.

Ever since it was discovered that biological membranes have a core of a bimolecular sheet of lipid molecules, lipid bilayers have been a model laboratory for investigating physicochemical and functional properties of biological membranes. Experimental and theoretical models help the experimental scientist to plan experiments and interpret data. Theoretical models are the theoretical scientist's...

Single-channel fluctuations in bimolecular lipid membranes induced by rat olfactory epithelial homogenates.

Chemosensitive single-channel fluctuations were observed to be induced in essentially solvent-free lipid bimolecular membranes by the addition of sonicated homogenates of rat olfactory epithelium. The chemosensitive channels were not observed when respiratory epithelium homogenates were used instead. Ionic selectivity is consistent with potassium ions as the charge carrier. These channels may b...

The Nature of the Negative Resistance in Bimolecular Lipid Membranes Containing Excitability-Inducing Material

When sufficiently small amounts of excitability-inducing material (EIM) are added to a bimolecular lipid membrane, the conductance is limited to a few discrete levels and changes abruptly from one level to another. From our study of these fluctuations, we have concluded that the EIM-doped bilayer contains ion-conducting channels capable of undergoing transitions between two states of different ...

Changes of the energy profile of gramicidin A ionic channel dependent on the ratio of cations of different species in the flux passing through the channel.

The elucidation of the mode of diffusion and migration of ions in ionic channels spanning the cell plasma membranes and cell organelles is a special problem demanding joint efforts of physicists and biologists. A general approach to this problem is to investigate a number of ionic channel properties in a wide range of electrolyte conditions. Experiments concerning model bimolecular lipid membra...

Ergosterol increases the intermolecular distance of amphotericin B in the membrane-bound assembly as evidenced by solid-state NMR.

Amphotericin B (AmB) exerts its antifungal activity by forming ion-permeable assemblies across lipid bilayers. To investigate AmB-AmB bimolecular interactions in the assembly, we carried out (13)C{(19)F}REDOR experiments using 14-(19)F- and (13)C41-labeled AmBs in sterol-containing and sterol-free palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine (POPC) membranes and measured the average distance between the ...
